This haunting, new arrangement of the African-American spiritual, “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” by Douglas Mears highlights the spiritual’s overwhelming sense of loneliness and despair. Its unrelenting repetition of the melody and the lyrics underscores both the pain of being lost and alone and the comfort of an irrepressible hope for the future. In addition to this imaginative setting for SATB choir and chamber orchestra, a reduced version for SATB choir, violin solo, harp, and organ is also available.
